I suspect part of the problem of quality in the modern world is that we expect to have so many things so fast (not only radios but TVs in every room, multiple cars, fancy kitchen gadgets, the computers were are enjoying right now) that we are unwilling to pay for quality or wait to purchase until we can afford it.
Of course there are other factors such as increases in labor cost etc. but I think that the above is a factor not often considered.
