Many sets back then did not have a fine tuning knob. YOu would select a station, then pull the knob off and adjust a screw to adjust the coil for that one station. There would be no need to adjust the tuning again. Each channel will have it's own adjustment.
It's possible that the chassis may have to removed to make these adjustments, but I think with most of them, it's just a matter of removing the selector knob.
Even some sets well into the 50's used this method. I have a Zenith and Westinghouse (both mid-late '50's) that do not have a fine tuner knob.
