I think it just simplifies the convergence since they are at least all on the same horizontal plane instead of 3 distinct 2-dimensional points. Less circuitry involved in getting all of them together at all points on the screen. Probably same magnetic circuit controls the vertical convergence on all 3 guns. I think.....
