The world wasn't filled with ligtigation and you could still publish articles about home made gizmos like this. Today a publisher would never even think of printing an article like this for fear of being sued by someone, and perhaps violating some government safety rules.

Those were the days when an inventor in a garage could cobble something together without thinking about the fact that somebody might sue him. And in fact, you were pretty much left to do whatever you wanted. If you got hurt it was you own fault for being stupid. The laws of natural selection removed the dummies from the gene pool. Today the world has been made idiot proof and as a result the world is full of idiots who are protected from their own self destruction by a government buracurcy that legislates safety for everyone.
