That used to be the preferred method of traversing hills-in a Model T Ford. 2 reasons-Ts had no fuel pump, the gas tank was either under the front seat, or in the cowl, & if you were about out of gas, getting the tank above the motor was a good idea. Another reason was that Ts had fabric/leather bands in the transmission, to equalise wear, & hopefully make 'em last longer, you drove in reverse when possible.
