I think that'd be my concern. I'd worry about further damage being done by just letting it run its course. When something starts arcing, smoking, sizzling, or glowing with the power of many suns, my first instinct is to unplug it and not plug it back in till I fix the problem.
Still, I can see some benefit in showing those things. Deters the curious from trying something dangerous just to see what happens. As the Mythbusters say, "There, we've done it, now you don't have to try it at home."
