I've done similar in such situations. I've sometimes clip the old cap lead right at the cap body, leaving about 1/10 inch or so of exposed lead extending out of teh insulation sleeve. And insert (if there's room) the new cap lead into the insulation sleeve, and solder the new lead to the old at that exposed 1/10 inch spot. Makes a neater looking connection, less likely to short against the chassis. You could use disc ceramic caps there, as it is likely that old cap is bypassing or coupling RF there.
