Since the cabinet was too large to take to the local antique repair shop and the radio dial is on the cabinet I had to mark the back of the dial plate with frequency references.

The AM needed almost no alignment whatsoever but the FM was totally off. 107.9 showed up all the way down around 94ish. The problem turned out to be an adjuster that had gone open. The part was screwed down and then glued on top of that making it's removal impossible so another was soldered in to do the job. You can see the old one desoldered on towards the bottom of the picture and the new one closer to the top.

After some tweaking the tuner is aligned perfectly and sounding fantastic. Another nice thing about taking the unit to the shop was getting the chance to learn from an expert how to do the procedure myself next time. One other thing he mentioned to me was that I did a very good job on the new caps, but that I should keep the leads on capacitors as short as possible. I didn't ask why at the time but now I'm curious. Was this just a personal preference or is there a real reason for this?
