Try using a sanding sealer on the wood and sand smooth before moving on to the final coats. I've been using Deft sanding sealer followed by either Deft semi-gloss or gloss lacquer. If you're using polyurethane or some other finish, check on the can for what sealer to use.
Sorry, not sure about the radio, but it seems reasonable for a 22 tube set!
