The bending when you turn up the contrast is related to the rather primitive sync take off scheme; it picks the sync off after the contrast control, after the video output stage in fact.  Bending and "flagging" with an overly strong signal or high contrast is generally just part of the charm of such early designs. Does it straighten up if you reduce the signal strength at the antenna input? (the 6T8 tube)?

Thank you. That was all I needed to know because my set was flagging when the contrast was turned down. Something was backwards! M5 was backwards, eureka! I installed M5 correctly and made some adjustments and got what you see in the video below.
