John, you don't know how prophetic those words were!
Slowly applied power through the variac, but I didn't get to more than 50 volts before I heard a loud SNAP! Instantly, I shut it off to investigate. Turns out the foul smell was coming from the vert ht/lin pot in the front, must have tin whiskers or something. This also caught my eye: a 5.6k resistor with a huge crack in it!
It now reads out at 12k, so obviously it will need to be replaced before I go any farther. Between that and the bad pot, I think my weekend is already full.
