Two suggestions to help keep costs down:

1. Join a club if there's one around you. Bulk purchasing means inexpensive caps. http://www.njarc.org/clubprograms.html#capacitorprogram. Clubs often have resistors and inexpensive, tested tubes and other parts available too.
