I had one of the Zenith computer monitors using the Flat Tension Mask tube, and it had an absolutely incredible picture, even better than a Trinitron.

Unfortunately, as good as the CRT was, the rest of the thing was plagued with poor solder joints and an HV section that periodically went into meltdown.

I think that Zenith was unable to get the production cost on these tubes down enough to put them into mass-market TV sets, as opposed to high-end display monitors. Perhaps they had problems making them larger than 14-15", as well. The flat screen called for extra thick glass to withstand the stresses, and larger screen sizes would make the issue worse. The 15" monitor I had weighed a ton...
