Usually you need an inductor, not a resistor, to reduce H width. Another caution - transistorized sets may have unusually long retrace time, which allows use of a lower-voltage horizontal output transistor. In this case there really isn't a lot of overscan, it's just that the trace is faster than normal and expands the picture horizontally.
