OKay, folks -- Back to the photo that started this thread.
Apparently the "invisible" person managed to get behind the boy on the left and the background of the picture was too cluttered, so they retouched the negative.
This looks to me like a large format negative, probably a 4 x 5 inch.
Airbrush took too long, as it first required a print, and then making a copy negative from that print.
For speed, newspaper pictures of this era, usually painted directly on the original camera negative!
Blow up the image in the first post in this thread to double size and you will notice an outline above all the people in the picture. Someone made that outline with a very fine camel's hair brush and ink (probably a fast drying thick red ink for visibility) and outlined the people. They then took a blunt brush and painted-out the cluttered background from the newly-drawn line to the edge of the picture and removed the partial head. Look outside the editor's crop marks and you can clearly see the brush strokes.
We had photo retouching a long time before photoshop!
