On your Avanti? Yes... most of the Zenith horizontal chassis had instant on. The Chromacolor tube, for the most part, is bullet-proof. You'll get a lot of opinions, and mine will be in the minority, but instant on isn't as bad as most tend to believe.
Think of it this way.... have you ever seen those shows on History channel or PBS on old Edison light bulbs, that have been on continuously for like 90 years? They still work because there isn't the constant cycle of on/off cool down. It's much the same way with a picture tube. I myself think it's better for the tube. I WILL back-peddle a bit, and say I don't like instant-on in a tube chassis set. I think the heat build up isn't good for the chassis, so on those... if it has a "vacation" switch, I turn em off.
I have a 1975 Sony Trinitron, with instant on. It see's little use now, but has been plugged in for like 30+ years, and the tube is fine, and Trinitron tubes weren't as long lasting as a Chromacolor. So there you have it... my 2 cents worth.
