Thanks, with a 10-meg resistor on the tip, I measure -9 volts at that pin. The manual for that meter must be around somewhere; I'll see if it says anything helpful.
The can is back on that transformer. It seems to work the same either way, but there's no reason to run it bare, given how twitchy the TV still is.
I guess I'll try installing the new transformer, but before doing that, maybe I'll disconnect the old circuit and run some leads out to connect the breadboard circuit just for kicks. Who knows if it'll work correctly with so much hanging out in the breeze, but it's only three wires.
