Some funtions of the RM-400 editing controller will not be recognised by the 5600 because it is a simple recorder. In common with the 5000/5030 players, it only has fixed-speed 5X search in both directions. It will be difficult to find the edit points. And to edit with it, you should deactivate the reverse function on the RM-440 (on the back you will find switches for the player and recorder sides). Otherwise, the 5600 will not preroll when needed.
I had for many years an UMatic editing suite with three VO5850, Sony 800 TBCs, a Director 2000(switcher) system and the RM-440. The RM440 can not control three machines at once (A/B roll editing), but I could do dissolves, wipes, and such. Once I was left with only one surviving 5850 editing recorder, and had to use my VP-5000 as a feeder (player) machine. The video quality was not the same (even with UMatic you could have worse-than-usual things), and sometimes the edit points shifted, but I kept editing until had time to lift the hood on the 5850s and repair them.
