I don't know what meter you are using, but my Fluke gives me the voltage drop of the diode. For example, a germanium diode will read approx 0.3v when forward biased and OL (over limit) when reverse biased. If you use an analog VOM, it will give a resistance reading when forward biased and read infinity when reverse biased.
