Early, the platen is full frame as they describe. Positives are flat scanned from below against a white plate which seems to be reflective to eliminate positive edges. Slides/negs have the white plate removed and are scanned against an upper light plate shining light to the scanner. The first scan determines neg/pos. Then it goes back and rescans each one.
I did have a problem with a bunch of loose individual 35mm negs. It scanned them but gave me neg scans. Photoshop fixed that. It may have a problem scanning large format negs as it is only set for 35mm. A large format neg would be a positive scan against the white plate. It would scan but need post correcting. It is still the best $99 I spent for the small stuff.
