These kinda sets were not "designed to" run on DC. It's just that a line-operated power supply using half-wave (single diode) rectification
can run on either AC or DC. (If on DC, reverse the plug and nothing will happen).

Many transformerless designs used voltage doublers (with two diodes) and can't run on DC.
