That orange thing ain't a resistor. It is a selenium rectifier...They are trouble-prone and release toxic selenium gas when they fail. Replace with a silicon diode. The numbers on the rectifier are its part number and you can look up its current and PIV rating if you have a period rectifier catalog. The plus end is the cathode (banded end of a modern diode).
