My experience with modern TV commercials on this set is the same, too much white and the picture goes dim and out of focus. Turn down the brightness to make up for it and normal pictures are way too dim. I have a Motorola color set made in 1967 that does a bit better in the same situation but will still show vertical bending in the picture if there is black and bright white sections on top of one another. I guess these commercials were made for modern tastes and TVs.
Still, I find the video quality and detail are at least equal to, if not better than the majority of vacuum tube color sets which came after. The only downsides were the finicky and imperfect convergence and the unavoidable pincushion distortion due to the flat faceplate.
