Interesting to note that the channel numbers are contained in the call letters of some of the stations, such as W47NY.

They do the same thing with
FM translators nowadays. For example, WGAM 1250kHz in Manchester, NH has a FM translator on 103.5MHz with the callsign W278CJ.
