NBC gave Nebraska ETV a settlement in order to get control of the "N". As I recall, it may have involved some cash and some equipment. (Remember that RCA, the parent of NBC, was still around in those days.) But after a few years, when Brandon Tartikoff took over as head of NBC, he realized that the new branding wasn't as memorable as the Peacock and brought back the Peacock in a combination logo that was called "The Proud N". Over time, the N was eventually dropped altogether. The N had too many connections to one of the worst ratings periods in the network's history, which Tartikoff expertly turned around. Hence, by that time, everyone wanted to forget the N. BTW, the simplified six colors of the "new" Peacock originally represented the various operating divisions of NBC, which included location stations division, TV network, radio network, in-house production, and so on.
