I have worked on that model; the 4587 is very close. It sounds like the output tubes are drawing excessive current; have you replaced the coupling capacitors? This radio is 1936 vintage, and all of the wax capacitors are going to be leaky. Also, check all of the resistors, as they tend to drift way up in value. I would put the 5Y3 back in, as the 5U4 draws more filament current.
