I had to start with some, IIRC, 1200 grit wet and dry sandpaper on mine, it had some deep scratches. Don't work too hard right on the scratches, spread it out or you will "dish" the area. Mine took a lot of work but came out very nice. It is few years later now and it still looks good and doesn't seem to be deteriorating, at least not quickly.
