In the 1950s and 60s, there were a lot of rebellious teenagers. What better way to rebel than by wearing clothes that were not the norm? In this case, a working man's clothes. T-shirts had a similar introduction to the public norm. They used to be undershirts, and kids started wearing them. Also navy sailors. Eventually they just became normal.
