If you have a two channel scope, try connecting to the grids of the output tubes, and invert the one input. That might reveal a bad phase inverter section (try at low, and distorting volume, with a freq generator.
Also, I once fed an output transformer from the speaker end and looked at the playes (obviously, power OFF).
