That's interesting. Do you know what chemicals?
The only environmental problem I ever heard of was cadmium in the green phosphor, but that was eliminated much earlier and had nothing to do with reliability of the tubes.
(Note, there was no reason I would have heard of the source of the reliability problems, so I am just curious and not implying it wasn't environmental issues.)
