If it ain't broke, don't fix it. You could have a look at the main board seeing as you're almost there. It will hinge down. There's a few clips and a screw or two holding it in. Look for caps that are leaking as this can corrode the traces.
Otherwise just turn it on and let it run and playback, record, rewind / FF and see if it errors out again. Also try all the functions from cold starts when it's been powered off for a while. This could also be a belt issue when it starts up and goes to feed the tape onto the head and the motor starts, the belt slips and the unit shuts itself down. A lot of these belts are getting pretty soft and weak now after 30+ years.
When it was shutting down did you hear any faint sound of a motor running?
