Remember reading somewhere that in the late 1940's/early 1950's some British people would put up an H or X shaped vertical low band antenna on their roofs even though they couldn't afford a TV just to show off to the neighbours. I think the antennas would only stand out in vertically polarisation areas as horizontal antennas wouldn't stand out so much. But when the medium power horizontal stations fired up most people could afford a TV so no need to show off. TV sales took off when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953...
