So lessee.. semi flat referred to the new 110 degree deflection scheme, which required a narrow yoke barrel to put the windings physically closer to the electron beam. The smaller neck required a smaller gun structure and smaller cathode of lower heater wattage, which led to cathode emission going kaput very early. Dunno if that's right, just hillbilly musings.
