There were plenty of folks with 2 TVs by the mid 50s many folks bought a ~10" in the late 40s and by 51-55 bought a new ~21" set. Some traded in the old one but many didn't. A few years ago I was given a literal truck load of TVs from a family that kept every one they had and seemingly bought a new one every 2-3 years until the 60s. Granted I could see a poor family having the perspective that nobody could afford a second TV...they didn't seem poor though.
The general public might have been ignorant to this but before videotape most live shows had to be kinnescoped for time delay which usually meant a week delay between East Coast and west Coast airings...this was especially true for stations that were in places out west that weren't yet serviced by network coax or microwave feeds and had to be shipped the kinnescope instead of getting the feed from Burbank.
