5 normal resistors is not enough voltage rating.
I suggest using Vishay VR68 resistors. 10,000 volt rated 1W.
TKS, That is what I was looking for, but was unable to find in all of the types they have to order.

The old one looked like a 50s-60s 1w part, but the bands were dark and not readable, tested at about 1m, schematic says 1.5, parts list only says (1.5m HV resistor 1w).
