Is it the TV that shuts down, the VCR, or both? The tv should stay on even if the vcr has a problem. Do you ever get light on the screen?
Additionally the vcr drum should do a half turn or so when it powers up. This generates a pulse that tells the cpu that the scanner servo is working.
