Phosphor Dot Microscope
While your absolutely do not need a microscope to boserve the beam landings on a CRT to perfome purity adjustments, it is a nifty gadget to have. I have a version made by RCA, which allows the dots to be observed while the end of the microscope is about 4" from teh screen. A little fooling around with my digital camera resulted in this somewhat fuzzy picture of the dots on my computer monitor. The dots on a early color CRT would be somewhat bigger.
