it was quite simple how this remote setup worked, it used the same system that zenith space command 300-400 used.
how it works is that there is a four pole stepper relay mounted on the remote receiver chassis. each time you click the volume button, the relay advances one pole, which has a resistor in series with the volume control. the resistors are different values.
