The HV to the CRT was controlled by a relay that would close once the sweep sections were warmed up so as not to burn a spot or a line on the CRT face, which could--no--would otherwise happen very quickly. A vintage 5" projection CRT is indeed blindingly bright and operates at about 25,000 volts on the anode to get it that way.
