Macrovision has never worked with Betamax; I think it's something to do with the auto gain recording level for video signals that Beta uses - yet another performance enhancement that VHS conveniently "left out" to give us the Crap-o-vision we know and love.
Speaking of which, my new (to me) Sony widescreen telly seems to have issues with Macrovision-encoded VHS tapes, despite the video being connected directly to the TV by a short (<1m) SCART (AV) cable. Real pain in the arse...
