I've seen similar things done in other shows too, even modern ones. Often times when you see a TV in the room, the screen looks odd, it seems like it's either a piece of cardboard or it's been painted or coated with something. I remember seeing one TV show where the characters were in a kitchen and there was a small set there, and the screen looked like it had been painted gray! I think that they do this so that they don't get reflection of the lights and cameras off the shiny glass of a CRT. Otherwise it would be too easy to goof and have a reflection of a camera crew in the glass
