I bought an S-video cable to try this modification...

and before chopping it up, I started examining the connections on the back of my DVD player. Since I do not own a modern television, I don't normally pay attention to the all the connections being that I don't use them. I noticed something that I didn't notice before.

Jonathon mentioned in his previous post If there is an inseries component with the chroma signal, remove it... and now I see what he's talking about.

The colored RCA jacks (green, blue, red) are labled Y, Pb, and Pr. Since this DVD is currently connected to my CM roundie, I unplugged the RCA Video Out (yellow jack) and plugged in the RCA component Y (green jack). PRESTO... A perfect black and white picture!

I then connected this to my '59 Motorola B&W set so I could compare going back and forth between the Y jack and Video Out jack. The picture is great! The easiest place to see the difference is in the text. For instance, when I press play, pause, or pull up the player's menu, I can see the crawling affect (as wa2ise talks about). I do not see it in the entire picture... mainly in the text. When I plug in the Y jack, the text becomes very clean and sharp... no more crawling. I can also see the difference around a few edges in the video of certain scenes.

I'm sure the interference from the color signal will vary between sets. On my Moto, it wasn't really bad to begin with, but apparently it was still there.

Feeding the green RCA jack labeled Y into the modulator works great, and keeps me from butchering an S-video cable. So, if your DVD or cable box, or satellite receiver has this connection, all you have to do is unplug the yellow jack and plug in the green jack.
