I used fine steel wool to remove the white paint at the top, Then used a dark minwax stain/sealer, I just rubbed it on with a rag and wiped off the excess, It covers the scratches even on the photo finish.
I had to learn tricks to fix cabinets at the shop, It seemed that almost whenever we brought a console in it got a scratch somehow (my boss was lousy at moving them) and that was a big no-no with the customers...
