Well, my eyes about popped outta my head when I saw what an R-389 went for-nearly $4000 ! An R-389 is a military radio-a "boatanchor"-made by Collins in '55 that receives from 15 KC to 1500KC. There were only 750 or so of 'em made, they are kinda the "G-33000" or "SX-1980" of the AM DX world. Maybe more like "CT-100" since they are so rare...I got mine about 10 yrs ago, I have about $1500 in it, but that includes a complete rebuild by one of the most highly regarded guys in the business. Quite honestly, if it weren't for the "braggin' rights", I might be tempted to sell mine-they ARE good, but I have several other radios that are very nearly as good. They won't even pick up to the top of the AM band nowadays, they stop more or less at WLAC, at 1510 KC. Mine had lots of little, PITA type problems-since they made so few, I really wonder if they ever really got all the little "bugs" out of the design. Mine had also been "whanged"-HARD- on the back panel, prolly early in its life, & had been relegated to being a "hangar queen" for most of its life. I like mine, DON'T wanna sell, but the thoughts of getting $4K....Hmmmmmmm...-Sandy G.
