Emerson 740

Here is a set I've had for about 12 years. My then-girlfriend had a friend who inherited her grandfather's house and this was in the attic. I think I gave her $25 for it. I had a better back in those days, I guess, because I hauled this down by myself. Kinda neat as the house and tv were the same age and I could really picture this set sitting in the living room.

The cabinet is pretty beat up. One neat thing is it has a tag on the bottom, just like old Emerson radios, "Cabinet by Ingraham". As found the set worked but barely. The cheater socket had been bypassed and the fuse was replaced with a length of solder! I decided a couple weeks ago that it was time to do something with it. I replaced the electrolytics but only part of the paper caps. I expected a hornet's nest of black beauties but there were only 2; mostly it uses those ceramic-tubular Elmencos. I recapped the vert & horiz and things work fairly well. There was something intermittent killing the hv but now things are right. The crt is a 21FP4 (as I recall), the unusual cylindrical face 21" tube. Unfortunately it is on the weak side; I added a brightener which helps. After awhile I may take it back off and see how it does.

I recall someone else has this set. I need a close-up of the tuner knob. What I have on there now is wrong; the picture in the Sams is to hard to make out.
