mercury battery
Doug,
I believe the cell you have is the same as this one in this Maggie remote. It is a mercury battery, and if I remember correctly, it is 4.7 volts. My neighbor had one of those in her 1958 Hoffman Solar AM radio. Since they won't sell those anymore, I came up with a working solution. I went to the camera department at WalMart and found an older style flash battery that was 4.5 volts. I was able to solder a little piece of metal onto one of the contacts in the radio so the battery would make contact on each side. The diameter of the flash battery was smaller than the mercury cell, so I wrapped some electric tape several times around it to fatten it up some. Without the tape, the battery would move around to much in the radio. After all was said and done, the radio played fine.
