sylvania superset

after all these years,i have finally gotten a sylvania superset in my possession.thanks to my friend joe,ie,technicolors hard work.friday morning it arrived from new jersey.e-45 chassis with electronic tuning.early american cabinet.working set that needed some help but well worth it to me.new jersey joe is a straight shooter, man of his word and a fast driver!crt was weak, fine tuning mech was broken,(common on the super tuners),bad solder joints and oval power cap died!i replaced crt with a rebuilt vdc i had been saving.repaired broken tuner, reflowed loose solder joints today.set looked very good!unfortunatly we had 88 degree weather with 75 percent humidity.the power cap died.luckily,i had an old zenith chassis that had the same cap.up and running!cabinet will get some touchup and it goes beside the other 70s sets.only want left is flat chassis zenith.will have one soon.thanks again, new jersey joe!

Around 1980 I job interviewed at the Sylvania plant in upstate NY, near Buffalo. Where they were making TV sets. One thing I remember was that they had circuit board cutouts from I think the CRT socket board, the cutouts saying "Have a Superbowl Superset token on us". Something their marketing dept said to mark the cutouts to give away, but decided not to, so they were just trash.

Sylvania's TV plant was in Batavia, New York. They built excellent sets there.

we had the largest distributor here in cols.sun tv was a large warehouse store that sold sylvania exclusively.is was located here in the southend and we saw almost 60-70 percent sylvania sets in the 70s and 80s.around 1990,they were almost gone.crts went on the solid state models and customers would replace once.by the time the second one went, the set was sent to the curb.i just didnt save one for myself back then.thought they would be plentiful.was i wrong!

In 1981-82, I worked for a dealer in Allentown that sold mostly Sylvanias, pre-NAP.

I liked those sets like yours because, once I learned the trade tricks from the older guys in the shop, you could make them look great!
Usually, a good cleaning of the pots made a world of difference.
Many Zenith fans were looking for something better after the system 3 made some bad first impressions.

The second color TV I bought was a 19" GTE Sylvania Superset in 1975. I remember it cost $449, a month's wages in those days. Some friends ended up with that set and it was still playing in their daughter's room 10 years ago last time I saw it.

Ron the pleasure was all mine, I'm very happy that your satisfied with our trade. Your company made a fruitless trip to cleveland enjoyable. And your generous nature has allowed me to almost complete my collection. I had a blast that day, and our deals were well worth the 600 mile drive to columbus.

Also did want to mention Ron's slyvania, came originally by way of boston, talk about the power of this board when sets can migrate to appreciative owners hundred if not thousands of miles away.

So, again ron glad to hear u like the set, I'll have to come out again and see u soon.

well the joy was short lived.set took a turn yesterday.i noticed some rather unappealing discoloration on the sides of my sylvania.crt was a 25vamp22 video display rebuild.it tested strong and actually looked good in the set.not there for 2 days and suddenly ,it was there.
couldnt degauss it out or move purity rings.i swapped out the crt in my xl100 parts set.the picture is amazing.rca crt rules!jigged up the other one in a zenith chassis and no discoloration!playing on the bench and no problems.i have seen
this before back in the day.simply, the wrong tube.not compatible for the set.not sure about the vdc tube number.25vamp22 should be a good swap.back in the shop days we got a number of rebuilds that may have been mislabeled.we actually installed a inline gun crt in a delta set due to wrong number.it was a ge 25v inline that had the same neck and plug as a delta.didnt make a picture at all!happened at least 2 times.set looks great now.hopefully it will hold up and i can sit it beside the magnavox bicentennial set,the zenith chromacolor and rca xl100.all from the 70s.sylvania is represented very well now

I often wondered what would happen if you swapped that inline GE into something else (or vice versa), now I can cross that off my list!

I bought a Superset console new in 1979 in the "Mediterranean" cabinet and it was a great one, used it until upgrading in 2004. In that time all it had was a couple of HOT's, a new CRT, and a new tripler.

i had an e 48 remote superset from 1979 with the same cabinet.had it few years and replaced nothing.our neighbor had a party and someone fell against the set.the back crt cover cracked and it damaged the socket board slightly.crt wouldnt light.i traded a hybrid philco with a beautiful picture for it.repaired the socket board and the black matrix tube made a stunning picture.no hand unit but a set of keys would operate all functions.it was a great set and i eventually sold it to another neighbor.should have kept it all these years.those supersets were almost bullitproof save for the crts.
