2002 Zenith 27" upright console

A lady gave me this set today and it makes the newest console TV that I've seen (2001 was the previous record). This is a 2002 Zenith 27" set and she said it got to the point it was shutting off and was hard to turn on, until I stopped turning on completely. When I tried to power it up, the HV would come up for a second and then shut down. The problem was a bad 100 uf cap in the SMPS. Fortunately, this set uses a bonded yoke Thomson CRT; so, none of those horrible Zenith tubes here. She also gave me a 13" BPC Sharp from '92 that WAS clean and supposed to be working; but, it got smashed by the Zenith when it decided to flip over in the truck. This set is really too new for my interest; but, maybe I can find it a home if I push it for six months on all the "for sale" sites.

2001 Is too new for me but one is enough. Only reason i got one is because is was 100% mint otherwise i would have passed. 1989 is my normal limit. Never liked the upright as there's no style and not much to look at as far as wood and trim. Had a 97 RCA Upright and gave it away. Looks like yours has a good pic. I decided awhile back that i would never bother with another one. especially with swivel bases. A pain to move around unless you lick it to keep it from turning.

The ones that are a real pain to move are the 32" and 36" upright consoles. This 27" set was bad enough.

The place where i got my 2001 console has a 36" upright Sony. I didn't even bother.

Ugh, swivel base cabinets, what a pain. They're hard to move even when empty.

The people who gave me this had just bought a Vizio flatscreen and she didn't like the picture. When I saw the set, I offered to adjust it and she didn't want me touching it. She said she was going to take it back and get a Samsung.

After I fixed the Zenith, I called and offered it back to her and she accepted it. She said that her hsuband really liked the Zenith and they didn't have to own a flatscreen TV. So, they picked up the Zenith today and they are taking the flatty back for a refund.

I'm glad it worked out that way because had they not taken it back, it would have sat here for who knows how long before I someone wanted it.

Sounds to me like she made a wise choice. I've had two 70" led flats and sold both after spending over $3000 each. Today, my main tv is a trinitron tube 36".

The pictures on the LCD sets are muddy, using a cable input and using the internal tuner. The CRT sets are a lot better, using a signal like that.

I see so many Zeniths like this on CL and just know that nobody is going to take it. Unfortunately its hard to forget what those sets cost new.
Like in your case RadioTVnut, unless the CRT is crap, they just need some set-up adjustments to look good again.

Everyone is getting an HD flatscreen, dumping their SD fatscreen and then using that tiny DTA-box Comcast is now charging rent for. I have to remind them that, unless they pay the BIG C at least a C-note every month, they still have SD. It sure sells some antenna jobs

TV technology has gone backwards in a way; CRTs are not fixed-pixel, thus more versatile.

Also, has it ever occurred to anyone here that anything digital is just a very advanced version of the telegraph? Analog is more sophisticated than that. Full speed astern!

If it had been one with a Zenith tube, it would have never made it this long.

I sold a lot of those vertical style Zenith's with the "finger masher" swivel base. I sometimes wonder if any of them are still in use.

Haha My swivel cabinets were not Zenith sets, they were just low-end junk on which the cabinets were the best part. The edges of the bases and the bottom panels are almost flush with one another in the back, easy enough to get them parallel, I've got to drill and screw those down sometime.

Magnavox produced a lot of the long, low style cabinets with the swivel base. Those were a little easier to move without ripping a finger off than the vertical ones.

When I sold a new TV, I stapled a plastic bag to the back and put the owners manual and a couple business cards in it. I also put the shipping screws in the bag, that way if I had to bring it back to the store for service at a later date I could put the bolts back in to keep the base from spinning around.
