Zenith Chromacolor Neck Setup

I'm having some trouble setting purity using the "red blob" method as discussed in various places. My issue seems to be that I can't pull the yoke back far enough. There is a video posted to youtube that shows how the convergence cluster and blue lateral magnet is supposed to be positioned on the neck and while I'm appreciative of the video I can't seem to make out much.

Below is a photo of the neck on my set. I could be wrong, but it seems everything is a bit far forward. The convergence controls seem to work fine, both static and dynamic, I just can't set purity in the way described for earlier Zenith sets.

There's a solid ring of metal inside the neck closer to the glass than the rest of the gun. That ring (convergence pole piece) is about as deep front to back as the convergence yoke... position the convergence yoke over it.

Worst case scenario where you can't get a red spot on screen with the deflection yoke against the convergence yoke pull both straight back without rotating them and set the purity and then readjust the convergence.

Excellent, thanks for the help. Am I to assume that once the convergence cluster is in position, the purity ring/lateral magnet assembly simply butts forward against it?

Depends on the style of rings and lateral (there were several different styles). I haven't been in any of my chromacolor sets this year so I can't remember exactly but I believe there is supposed to be a gap. Often on the blue gun (the single gun closest to the top in consoles) has a metal tab that sticks up above it that functions as the blue lateral magnet pole piece.

The purity ring / blue lat are on backwards !
It should also be farther back. Conv yoke is ok but may need to
come back a little. Position on the neck are not super critical. On
newer in-line sets it can be. You can mark them or take a photo.

I thought that lateral magnet/purity ring assembly was on backwards. The SAMS photo shows it the opposite way as well.

Here is what I have now. The cluster is positioned square over the large cylindrical sleeve towards the front of the neck. It was originally about 1/4" too far forward. I flipped the other assembly 180* and positioned the purity rings over that first gap in the blue gun. Does that look better? The purity rings look to be missing 2 of the 3 hold down tabs. I'm awaiting a new tripler so I can't try out the changes just yet. Please excuse the dust. I just bought two of these Avanti sets and I'm trying to nurse them back to health.
