Magnavox 27" combo with the Phantom
I just got back from thrifting today. I found this 27ZP4 Maggie combo with the Phantom remote control. This is the first Maggie remote control set I have seen. The remotes are Ebay but I never see the actual TV. This remote is only loudness and channel. The little red buttons below the UHF tuner are the power tuning butons. The square in the bottom right of the tv screen is the channel indicator. There is a cable attatched to the back of the tuner that rotates the channel indicator. The remote sensor is behind the speaker cloth on the right bottom. I am pretty happy to have found this set. I needed another 6' combo like another hole in my head. The Phantom made me grab it. Restoration will have to wait. I'm working on other projects. This has to be a pretty rare set. I bet it cost a pretty penny when new!!!!!

Wow, polaraman.
That is a very acrobatic TV! And with casters, no less. I once had a 27" Admiral as a teenager, but that was long ago. I would say 27" sets ARE pretty rare indeed.

That's for sure! That's a pretty neat find. I've never seen a 27" B&W, but that picture has got to be pretty darn big. What with the old "bug-eye"-shaped rectanguar CRT face, that 27" screen is probably pretty similar in raster size to a modern 32" (or larger) squared-corner rectangular color CRT.

Those are very nice sets! All TV collectors will need to live in 10,000 sq ft mansions though, if these are going to become the new era of collectable TVs, LOL .
There were several of those still in daily use in the West LA area when I was still working for a shop there in the early 90s. Most of the ones I've seen were black oriental cabinets with sliding doors. That cabinet is more unusual. Do I see the original showroom sticker on the lower right of the safety glass??? Charles

Nice set!
Good that you could save it. A local Junque Store has a Black Lacquer Maggie, not sure of the tube size, maybe 24", possibly 27", smaller overall than that one but still too big to bring home.

This picture is currently my front entrance. The Capehart is on the left and the new Maggie is on the right. Behind the Capehart are two more consoles I got from the free pile. I spent the day clearing a spot for them. I'm glad I am not married. I would most likely be in trouble right now.

Charles,
The object in the lower right corner is the channel indicator. Condition: The TV is dead - not a single tube lit. I soft started it with no results. Radio and record player are working. The controls need to be cleaned. The 33rpm needle is pretty dull. It skipped all over the place when I had Harpers Bizarre on there. I thought it would be fitting to play Feeling Groovy on this groovy set. The 78rpm is working fine. I put a stack of Gene Krupa 78s on the player. A local big band jazz concert was washed out by rain tonight. I'm compensating for the lost show. We need the rain pretty bad, and I will not complain about it. polaraman

I have a Maggie stereo in my living room, (no TV). I'd take one of those B&W maggies if I could close the doors and hide the TV portion, just to have the stereo.
I say B&W only because any color set is going to have tube-neck issues and can't go close to the wall. I figure this is a good way to have another set around without it looking too crazy next to my "modern" set. Either way, cool find!

Carmine talking about neck issues reminded me of one time when I delivered a new Magnavox Combo (They called them "Theatres") out on a three day home demonstration. I got a call the next day from the prospective customer wanting to know how much a new picture tube cost. They had a large painting hanging on the wall behind the set and sure enough it fell during the night shaving the neck off the CRT which IIRC was a 25AP22. They bought the set and a new CRT. During the 70's we'd run across a 27 incher every now and then, but they weren't all that common even when they were new.

The maggys are nice sets . I have a magnavox color am/fm, phono combo . It has the remote control set-up like yours does, polorman . You will probably finD the tv just has bad solder joints and silly stuff wrong with it . Thats what was wrong with mine . They are nice tvs with nice detailed cabinets they were expensive in their day . My dad paid $800.00 for his magnavox in 1967 .

I found your set in the binder.
Astro-Sonic Stereo Theatre 27 Far Eastern Contemporary The channel indicator window was an optional feature, as was power tuning. I have the service documents for the TV chassis, remote receiver, power tuning assembly, radio tuner and amplifier, as well as the mechanical diagram for the changer.

Our family set from about 1961 to 1972 was an Admiral 27" BW. Set went on to my older brother till about 1980. Think it got dumped at that time, of course I tried to save it, but lost.
